Living with an antenna mounted to your skull might seem absurd for most of us. Neal Harbisson has been doing so since 2004, and is often called the worlds first cyborg. He fights for the rights of cyborgs and the freedom of every human to design his/her body. His work raises the question: Should we continue to adapt our planet to us, or should we as humans adapt to it? This is just one of the core questions he will be discussing with Stephen Sackur during the One-on-One ses-sion at the St. Gallen Symposium.

La mayoría de la gente al escuchar la palabra “cyborg” piensa en ciencia ficción, pero Neil nos explica que él piensa y se inspira en animales existentes, esta inspiración le ha ayudó a percibir el color mediante vibraciones dentro de su cráneo mediante la implantación de una antena. Nos invita a entender y extender la percepción de la realidad mediante nuevos sentidos basados en tecnología, un movimiento que podría ser llamado el renacimiento de nuestra especie.

Fue formado en Cataluña, artista y activista cyborg contemporáneo de origen británico. Neil es más conocido por tener una antena implantada en su cráneo y de ser reconocido oficialmente como un cyborg por un gobierno. Harbisson se identifica así mismo como un cyborg, su mente y cuerpo se unen a la cibernética. No siente que está utilizando la tecnología, al contrario, él se siente tecnología. Sus obras de arte investigan la relación entre el color y el sonido y con ello experimentar los límites de la percepción humana y explorar el uso de la expresión artística a través de extensiones sensoriales. En 2010 fue cofundador de la Fundación Cyborg con Moon Ribas, una organización internacional que tiene como objetivo ayudar a los seres humanos se convierten en cyborgs, defender los derechos de cyborg y promover cyborgism como movimiento social y artístico.

Neil Harbisson was born completely colorblind, but when doctors told him there weren’t any treatments available, he started thinking about another way he could “see” color.

So he worked to design an implant with a sensor that could pick up light and read wavelengths. A corresponding chip that’s implanted against his skull then translates the colors into vibrations.

Since his successful implant surgery in 2004, Neil has been able to “hear” colors and feel their vibrations. Each color Neil sees is perceived as a note that he hears.

But it hasn’t been easy. After losing his job and almost getting denied a passport, Neil now works to protect the rights of cyborg and change the public’s perception of them.

Neil Harbisson ha convertido en realidad la famosa frase final del replicante Roy Batty en Blade Runner. Porque ha visto cosas que nosotros no creeríamos. No hay evidencia de que haya sido testigo de naves que arden más allá de Orión, pero sí de que es capaz de ver colores extraterrestres. Será porque algo de replicante tiene este británico de padre irlandés y madre catalana nacido en Londres y criado en Mataró (donde ya dio muestras de su peculiar personalidad y su espíritu rebelde cuando se encadenó a un árbol para evitar que fuera talado).
Harbisson, músico y artista, es el primer hombre que ha sido reconocido legalmente como un cíborg. Sucedió cuando en 2004 consiguió que la administración británica aceptara su foto con el eyeborg, un dispositivo diseñado por él mismo y conectado a su cerebro, para renovar el pasaporte. El eyeborg consiste en un sensor y una antena que envía señales a un chip implantado en su cráneo; este chip convierte las frecuencias de luz en vibraciones para que sea capaz de escuchar los colores. Hasta que comenzó a utilizar este dispositivo Harbisson no sabía lo que era percibir el color: una extraña enfermedad congénita llamada acromatopsia limitaba su visión al blanco y negro.
Neil ha hecho de su peculiar percepción un objeto artístico y una causa de lucha. Artísticamente compone música traduciendo los colores en sonidos, o pinta cuadros realizando el camino inverso. En su faceta de activista creó la Cyborg Foundation junto a su amiga y coreógrafa Moon Ribas, una organización que defiende el derecho de los humanos a convertirse en ciborgs incorporando tecnología a nuestros cuerpos. Mientras su sueño transhumanista se convierte en realidad, Harbisson continúa experimentando con su eyeborg: gracias a la conexión vía satélite de la antena puede recibir sonidos del espacio exterior -y ver los colores que hay allá afuera- o conectarse a Internet y percibir colores de cualquier lugar del mundo. Harbisson cree que en un futuro cercano el suyo no será un caso extraño, puesto que la biología tiene limitaciones que podremos suplir con la tecnología y afirma que “todos los humanos estamos en transición de convertirnos en ciborgs”.

Artist Neil Harbisson was born completely color blind and sees the world in grayscale. But even though Neil cant see color doesnt mean he cant sense it. Thats because Neil Harbisson is a cyborg who can hear color.

In 2004, Neil convinced a doctor to implant into his skull an antenna that detects and transposes colors into corresponding tones — allowing him to hear color through bone conduction. He considers it a new body part.

«This is an implant, so its permanently attached,» Neil says. «Theres no way of removing it.»

As co-founder of the Cyborg Foundation and one of several known cyborgs on this planet, Neil expects humans to be more open to the idea of implanting technology into their bodies in the near future.
