The West Coast Trail is a 75 km point-to-point hiking trail along a remote stretch of the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island. Originally created in 1907 to help rescue shipwrecked survivors along the coast, it’s become one of BCs most popular long-distance trails, attracting nearly 7,000 visitors each year from all over the world.
The trail offers a unique and challenging experience, complete with deep sand, thick mud, torrential rain, creek crossings in cable cars, slippery roots, rocks and boardwalks, not to mention the countless ladders. The coast guard rescues someone from the trail on average every second day. But it’s also a place of incredible beauty, offering glimpses of wildlife like wolves, eagles, humpback whales, and sea lions, as you make your way through dense forests, past lakes, caves and waterfalls, and along rugged beaches and awe-inspiring coastal features at every turn.
Growing up in Vancouver, Id always wanted to hike the trail, so I jumped at the chance to join my friend Karl in the summer of 2017 when he managed to secure permits.
I’m an ultra-distance trail runner based in Vancouver, BC. From the mountain ranges of Canada and the USA, to the Alps, the Andes, and the Himalayas, I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue adventures around the world.
For our first parikrama we went to Kamyavan and had darshan of Vrinda-Devi, the beautiful reddish coloured Deity worshipped by Srila Rupa Goswami 500 years ago. In the courtyard of her temple we discussed many of Radha and Krsna’s pastimes, as well as Maharaja Yudhisthira’s answers to Yamaraja’s 10 questions that took place at nearby Dharma-kunda. The kirtans led by Bada Haridas prabhu were especially sweet in that most auspicious atmosphere.
Kirtan is a devotion in the form of music. In the relationship between the Lover and Beloved, there exists only one experience, only one motivation, and only one reality: Just Love.

Yamunotri
In this segment, “Yamunotri”, we visit close to the source of the holy Yamuna river. With our eyes we see her sacred waters and with our ears we hear how she descended from the spiritual world. A special feature is beautiful footage the Himalayan mountains.
Gangotri
On the second leg of our Char Dham parikrama we visited the holy site of Gangotri. Gangotri is situated not far from where Mother Ganges flows out of the Himalayan mountains. In the town of Gangotri is a beautiful temple where Mother Ganges is worshipped and people can be seen bathing in her sacred waters in the many ghats along the river. In this video we see scenes of Mother Ganges in both Haridwar and Gangotri as we hear of her descent from the spiritual world into the material creation.
Kedarnath — The Abode Of Lord Siva
Kedarnath was the third stop our on pilgrimage to the Himalayas. Despite a devastating flood in 2013 which destroyed much of the infrastructure, the temple remains intact as it has for 5,000 years. It was built on the order of the five Pandava brothers for the express worship of Lord Siva. The Siva lingam inside is in the shape of a hump. Adi Sankaracarya renovated the temple and lived in Kedarnath for sometime. He actually passed away there at the age of 32 years. His samadhi was near the temple but was washed away in the flood in 2013. Vaisnavas worship Lord Siva as the greatest Vaisnava, a per the statement in Srimad Bhagavatam.
Badrinath — A Destination Supreme
Badrinath is famous as one of the larger Char Dhamas of India. Those dhamas are Ramesvaram, Jagannath Puri, Dwarka and Badrinath. Situated high in the Himalayas on the banks of the Alakananda river Badrinath has been visited by great saintly persons since time immemorial. The deity in the temple is self-manifested from a salagram sila and is two feet high. During the winter when it becomes unbearably cold, the temple is closed for 6 months. Before closing the doors the pujaris light a ghee lamp which is found to be still burning when they open the doors 6 months later. It is understood that Narada Muni and various demigods perform the worship during those cold winter months. Nearby is the cave where Srila Vyasadeva wrote down the Vedic scriptures. The border of China is only a few meters away.
The lila of Ajamila demonstrates why being a devotee is so unique. To know the Lord and to chant His name is what frees us from the laws of this material universe. Despite all our failings we can still take His shelter. Ajamila’s narrow escape from the servants of Yamaraj (Lord of Death) shows what it means to have the personal mercy of the Lord.

The ‘Churning of the Ocean’ is a metaphor for our spiritual life. It allows us to see the different stages on the path and it gives us the tools we need to reach what really matters: God-realisation. Gurujis commentary is fundamental to understand the beauty of this lila in its different facets. It further demonstrates the Lords grace and His continuous help and support during our every action.
